How Heating Systems Started and Evolved

Ancient Beginnings of the First Heating Systems

Ancient Rome had its own central heating system technology in the name of the hypocaust system which typically utilized flue gases and hot air. To heat confined areas, gases where allowed to flow up through hollow wall spaces going towards the different areas of the structure. This was a simple system yet was as effective as you can get at that time. It could perhaps be the basis of the later developments in the industry as well.

The Transition to More Advanced Systems

Again heating systems (interesting to know is that the Dutch term is verwarming) today are based on what was first used in the ancient times. And the first source of fuel was coal which was used to heat water. Hot water would then pass through a number of pipes which go towards the radiator that give off the heat. Steam is also produced again producing heat for the interiors. Aside from coal, natural gas and oil were also commonly used in homes. However, there was an oil shortage around 1970’s which prompted for the use of electricity in producing heat for home structures. Through electricity the furnace was able to blow air into a glowing wire thereby producing hot air. The problem with using electricity was that it was not that cost efficient. But through the advancement in technology, more energy and cost efficient central heating systems were also the developed in the following years.

Today you have two options in distributing heat in the interiors. You can use the forced air system and you also have the choice to use hot water or steam system. Such systems required duct works and pipes. The furnace is connected to the duct work and the pipes are connected to the boiler. That is why such installations typically require architects and engineers.

In a forced air system you have burning gas flames which heat the air. On the other hand, the steam system utilizes heated water. It is run through a connection to the radiator which in turn provides the hot air to the enclosed space.

Heating Systems Today

Today gas is still the most popular energy source in producing heat in homes in the United States. This is due to its efficiency both in producing heat and in terms of costs as well.
The trend in the market though is for smaller radiators and boiler. With space having a premium nowadays, this is a solution that is quite timely and practical. Most of these systems are also quite easy to operate so making your home comfortable can be done so with convenience.

Another solution that is being made available today is the use of natural energy sources such as solar energy and underground heat. These are also quite in demand because of the adverse effects seen in the excessive use of non-renewable fuels which do not only deplete the natural resources but give off emissions harmful to the environment as well.
